A "pheromone trap" is a good and safe way to reduce the number of fruit flies. This method uses a pheromone or parapheromone to attract the male fruit flies into a trap where they are killed.

Pink Bollworm Pheromone Lure Trap is a mono-host pest and hence, can be easily managed provided all necessary precautions are taken. Chemical control is difficult because the insect spends most of its time within the fruiting bodies and is not exposed to direct chemical spray. Only pesticides with good residue can help in controlling the pest at egg-hatching stage. This means 4-6 sprays at weekly intervals. Excessive use of pesticides always results in a flare up of secondary pests like army worm, American bollworm and spider mites because sprays perish most of their natural enemies.

The best control of pink bollworm has been demonstrated with the use of Pheromone. Fields treated with pheromone also have a higher population of predators and parasites that are an important component of integrated pest management. Fields where pheromone products were applied had negligible moth activity compared to chemically controlled cotton fields. The yield of seed cotton improved in pheromone treated fields. A new formulation of pheromone has recently been developed.

Introduction: Funnel traps are useful tools for monitoring moths. They give information on the population density of the pest and help the grower to determine the optimal control strategy. These traps are designed for multi-season use and are resistant to severe weather conditions. They are very easy to assemble and clean.

Product Description: Funnel trap, as the name suggests, is a funnel-covered at the top by a canopy that holds the pheromone dispenser, with radial openings all around for entry of the Moths. Moths attracted by the pheromone enter the funnel, hit the sides while in flight and drop down into the transparent polythene bag attached to the lower end of the funnel and get killed. The polythene bag can be   cleaned and replaced occasionally, depending on the insect catch rate.

How they work: The males, attracted by the female pheromone lure, enter the trap and get hit by the sides of the walls at the base of canopy and fall into the polythene bag and get killed. These traps are installed in the fields at the rate of 5-7 traps per hectare for monitoring and 15-20 traps per hectare for mass trapping. Traps should normally be attached to stakes at crop height and placed within the crop with at least 50m between each trap.

To avoid affecting the efficiency of the trapping system it is strongly recommended that traps be used only for the one species. Never use the dispensers for other insect species in these traps

Pink Bollworm Pheromone Trap is a major pest of cotton crop. Insect is highly adaptable to different climatic conditions and larvae hide over unfavorable cottonseed in which they are well protected and remain alive for many months. Survival of the pest from one season to another is entirely through hibernating larvae in seeds, soils and plant debris. Incidence of P. gossypiella during the season commences from the moth emerging from the over wintering larvae through the summer season. This is the only pest, which peaks at harvest. In the younger crop larvae bore into tender squares and feed within resulting into drying of the terminal shoots. Later flower buds and bolls are attacked. Infested flower buds fail to open up completely due to webbing by the larva, giving the appearance of a typical rosette bloom. Larvae damage the bolls by tunneling into them, destroying the pulp and lint. Infested bolls open prematurely permitting fungal infection. Lures should be changed every 4 weeks. The Funnel traps should be emptied weekly to avoid the trap filling and repellency from putrefaction of the insects caught.
